Who is the APS?
The Animal Protection Society (APS), founded in 1994, is a non-profit, non-government organisation dedicated to improving the health and welfare of dogs and cats in Samoa.
From its humble back-yard beginnings, the APS has expanded into an organisation employing 5 full-time local employees who work alongside veterinarians from overseas.
The APS runs a veterinary clinic for dogs and cats, which includes a 24/7 emergency service, within the Ministry of Agriculture compound in Avele, Apia, and they also offer home visits throughout Samoa on request.
Services at the APS clinic are charged at a cost-recovery basis. Local and international sponsors support the wages of local staff and all other overhead costs. Currently all vets are volunteers from overseas.
In addition to their at-cost clinic services, the APS conducts two free Community Outreach programs: a humane education program and a village desexing program. As they are offered free-of-charge, the APS is in constant need of funds to maintain these two valuable programs.
APS Mission:
Healthy animals; healthy Samoa
APS Vision:
Working together to help the animals of Samoa
Galulue fa’atasi mo le puipuiga o meaola a Samoa
How to find the APS clinic
The APS clinic is located in the Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries compound in Avele, just south of Apia. Travelling south on Cross Island Road, the compound is the next driveway on the left after Medcen private hospital and the APS sign is located at the driveway.
Veterinary services
The APS clinic offers routine veterinary services, including surgery, preventative medicine and consultations for sick or injured dogs and cats. Appointments to see a vet can be made by calling the APS clinic on +685 8422403 or +685 22403, with the clinic open for appointments Monday to Friday 8.30am to 2:30pm, excluding public holidays. As the vets also conduct field work, clients are strongly encouraged to make appointments to ensure a vet is available. Home visits are available by appointment during office hours only and attract a travel fee.
A 24-hour emergency service is also available by calling +685 7777-APS (7777-277) outside of these hours. An after-hours fee may be incurred for emergency consultations, to help recover the cost of petrol and overtime wages. To ensure the animals receive the best possible care, home visits are unavailable for emergency services, except in exceptional circumstances. The health and well-being of the animals of Samoa is always our top priority!
